Pet odors can be a your worst nightmare. It is not what you want to come home to after a long day of work and find “little surprises” left by your pets. Pet odors can limit your social life because your embarrassed to invite family and friends over to your house. I will give you some easy and practical solutions to eliminate the smells from your home.

First off, spraying contaminated areas of carpet or furniture with products from the grocery store are not going to solve the problem. Also another common myth is that just a regular carpet cleaning WILL NOT get rid of the urine smell. Urine will actually start to bond to the carpet fibers and does come out just by a topical surface cleaning. If the contamination is light to moderate then a topical treatment with specific professional urine removal products and natural deodorizers may be sufficient for the task. This process goes as follows:

1. Apply Urine Pre-Treatment.
2. Give 15-20 minutes of dwell time sometimes more depending on level of contamination.
3. Thorough cleaning of the room.
4. Apply natural deodorizer to the areas that were affected by the urine.
5. Do not allow the deodorizer to dry too quickly.

Upon a thorough inspection with our nose, a hydrosensor, and ultraviolet urine illuminator it may be necessary to perform a subsurface of the affected area. Urine in severe cases will get into the backing of carpet, the carpet pad (not just the surface of the carpet) and on furniture it can get into the stuffing of the pillows. If it has gotten into the backing or pad of the carpet then we must re-liquify the affected urine areas to make it mobile. We will “re-flood” the urine with a professional odor and stain remover product and then give it 15-30 minutes of dwell time. After which we will extract the affected areas with the Water Claw tool which extracts from the face yarn, backing, and pad.

1. Heat up water and OSR with bucket heater.
2. Re-liquify affected ares of severe urine
3. Allow for 15-30 minutes of dwell time.
4. Extracted affected urine areas with Water Claw.
5. Smell area and check the level of smell
6. Clean carpet thoroughly and deodorizer afterwards.
7.Repeat steps 1-4 if there is extreme contamination.

This process is extremely effective at eliminating severe urine contamination. In some cases though the sub-flooring may need to be sealed before the sub-surface extraction is completed.

After either of these procedures are completed…if you have any re-contamination here is a simple solution you can use:

1. Get a spray bottle and fresh bottle of white distilled vinegar.
2. Mix 1 part white distilled vinegar with 1 part wafer into to spray bottle.
3. Spray moderately to contaminated area.
4. Allow to dwell for 15-30 minutes to effectively neutralize the urine.
5. Repeat if necessary

We all know how valuable and sentimental our precious rugs can be. Textiles may have been passed down in your family for multiple generations or your rugs were purchased on one of many vacations around the world. We are often very attached to our valuable textiles. This will one of several blog posting that I (Jonathan Mickelsen – Vice President of Clean Your Carpets Inc.) will write regarding the care of your precious rugs. So where you begin with the care of your Rugs?

Well first begin by asking yourself when was the last time that your rug was professionally washed (the industry approved method is classified as “full immersion wet wash”) not dry cleaned or having the rug surfaced cleaned in your house?

Next is it time for your rug to be washed? Here’s a simple test to tell you if your rug needs to be professionally washed yet or not. Simply flip your rug face down then run your vacuum over the dirtiest part of the back of the rug. Is there a moderate to extreme amount of soil coming out? If so then it’s time to have your rug washed professionally. If not, your rug will need to be cleaned every 2-4 years depending on the location of the rug in your house.

So who do you call to have your rug(s) washed by? Who will you entrust with the care of your rugs to? Choosing a rug cleaner can be a daunting task either because you aren’t sure who to trust or due to a bad past experience. Well I want to help enable and assist you in finding a reputable and quality based rug with experience. So I’ll share a few tips to help you choose a good rug cleaner in Rochester, NY

1. Ask the rug cleaner to explain their pre-inspection process to you
2. Will your rug be properly “DUSTED?”
3. Are you going to do a full immersion wet wash on my rug?
4. If you rug has fringe, will you wash and detail the fringe?
5. Tell the rug cleaner what type of fibers the face yarn fibers and foundation fibers are and then ask how the rug should be treated during the washing process?

Their answers to these question will help decide to choose the right rug washing company.

This blog post was written by the Rug washing experts in Rochester, Pittsford, Penfield, Mendon, Fairport, and Victor NY – Clean Your Carpets Inc has Rochester’s only Oriental Rug Spa
